Felice and Adaucto Church and antique fountain

Dedicated to the two Christian martyrs killed under the emperor Diocletian, the church was erected in the seventeenth century with an adjoining guesthouse (or hospitale) dedicated to St. Basil by the will of the cardinal of Fermo, thanks to the large influx of pilgrims attracted by the presence of water considered miraculous.

The ancient fountain, not far from the church, has been recently restored and can still be visited in all its splendor.

The building stands on the crypt and apse of a previous Benedictine abbey dedicated to Sant’Atto (or Attone) dating from the twelfth century and placed under the jurisdiction of the abbot of Montecassino.

It has a gabled roof and the main facade is enriched by pilasters and windows surmounted by pediments.

On the left side there is a bell tower that supports two bells.

In the beautiful surrounding garden stands a statue of the Madonna blessed by Pope John Paul II in 1980.

The side entrance has an artistic portal in wrought copper on which eight panels depict as many milestones in the history of Christianity, from the episode of Cain and Abel to the Holocaust.

The interior has a single nave with two side chapels; the first on the right is dedicated to Santa Maria Maggiore with a valuable gilded wooden altar of the seventeenth century. The presbytery is elevated by five steps, on the sides of the first step two steps to access and exit the crypt.

On the high altar there is a painting of Saints Felice and Adaucto, which bears the name of the hamlet: Christian martyrs under the emperor Diocletian.

It is said that in 1646 a young shepherd appeared to two monks on the occasion of the discovery of a miraculous water, which over the years had beneficial effects on the sick and called the devotion of many pilgrims, so much so that in the seventeenth century the cardinal of Fermo had built, together with the current church, a guesthouse (or hospitale) dedicated to Saint Basil.

Legend has it that the two monks pointed out, at the altar of the previous church dedicated to Sant’Atto (or Attone), the two Saints Felice and Adaucto as proponents of the miracle and therefore worthy of worship and devotion.

The plain is that of the valley floor of the Menocchia stream, which here flows in its last kilometers towards the Adriatic Sea.

The ancient fountain, not far from the church, has been recently restored and can still be visited in all its splendor.
